Syracuse does realize Greg Paulus is a football player now, right?

The Greg Paulus, Syracuse Quarterback train, as you might have expected, is rolling on apace with little to no regard for the probable realities of the situation on the field. While Paulus attempts to rediscover his high school football prowess and somehow translate his old Duke basketball moves to the gridiron, his newly minted fans in the Syracuse student section, are … well, they’re staying humble about the whole thing:

This exactly the reception you’d expect for a third-string quarterback who hasn’t put on a helmet or shoulder pads in five years, isn’t it? Paulus’ old classmates at the Duke Chronicle confirm that, yes, this shirt actually does exist, and is purchasable by actual human beings:

After all, the Greg Paulus World Tour, hatched as parody back in May, was confined to cyberspace. But the 2009 Pauluspalooza Homecoming Tour is very much a real thing, and it’s going to cost $13.99 — quick, get your 10 percent off promo! — to show the former Duke point guard some 100-percent-lightweight-cotton love. (Or you can win the tee by designing a football uniform for Syracuse. So, $13.99 plus shipping it is.)

What they are too courteous to add is that this all seems a bit, oh, premature for the hometown hero whom Rivals currently lists sitting pretty behind Ryan Nassib and Cameron Dantley on the depth chart. We assume by now that Doug Marrone has actually seen him attempt a pass, but if Paulus can’t beat out an incumbent senior who in turn can’t beat out a lightly recruited redshirt freshman of whose existence even Syracuse fans seemed unaware when he was suddenly named the starter in the spring, there’s bound to be some awkward crowd shots in the stands. And this should go without saying, but whether or not Paulus gets his feet under him, if Nassib and/or Dantley run into trouble early in the season (a fair bet with five ‘08 bowl teams in the first six games), the clamor for his insertion will make last year’s short-lived Willy Korn mania look like a church picnic.
