We’re nearing the end of the 2009 season, and we’re taking a look back at how the top 20 on the money list fared. Next up: Stewart Cink.

Coming into 2009: Cink was a well-regarded but majorless pro, always lingering around the top 10 of the majors but never quite breaking through. For much of the year, he was best known as golf’s most popular Twitterer. And then came a Sunday afternoon in Turnberry …

High-water mark: Cink played decently in the Accenture Match Play and recorded a third-place … aw, just kidding. As anybody who hasn’t been living in a cave knows, Cink triumphed over Tom Watson in a playoff for the British Open. While almost nobody wanted Cink to win, everybody was okay with him once he did.

The low point: With a chance to come up big in his hometown tournament at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, Cink, while holding the lead on Friday, drove two straight shots on the tenth hole right onto the neighboring residential street. And that was that for his chances in Atlanta.

Outlook for 2010: Cink is playing as well as he ever has on Tour, though it’s worth noting that he only had four top-10s all season. But he’s got that major in his bag now, and that brings you all kinds of confidence. While 2010 can’t possibly match 2009 for breakthroughs, it could easily be Cink’s best season ever.

How the heck does Stewart Cink have 66,000 Twitter followers? (That item’s a bit dated. He’s now got 1.1 million.)
