FORT MYERS, Fla. — Longtime Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra retired from baseball on Wednesday morning, signing a one-day contract with the Red Sox in order to retire as a member of the team.

Everywhere I go I get so many [Red Sox fans] come to me and tell me ‘Thank you. We miss you. We still love you.’ And it’s so genuine and the feeling is mutual. Hopefully from my actions throughout my career in that uniform and hopefully my actions today again tell them what it means to me.

– Nomar Garciaparra

“I’ve always had a recurring dream, to be able to retire in a Red Sox uniform,” Garciaparra said at a press conference at City of Palms Park. “Thanks to [owners] Mr. [John] Henry, Mr. [Tom] Werner, Mr. [Larry] Lucchino and [general manager] Theo [Epstein], today I get to fulfill that dream and retire as a Red Sox. “Earlier today, I did sign a minor league contract to be a part of the organization once again. I was getting choked up then, and I’m getting choked up now. I’ve got the chills. “But to be able to have that dream come true, I really just can’t put into words because of what this organization has always meant to me, meant to my family, the fans. I always tell people Red Sox Nation is bigger than any nation out there, and to be able to tell people that I came back home to be back to Red Sox Nation is truly a thrill.”Garciaparra will join ESPN as a baseball analyst. He will be seen primarily on “Baseball Tonight” but will also serve as an occasional game analyst. The 36-year-old Garciaparra spent the first nine seasons of his 14-year career in Boston, where he developed into a fan favorite, a perennial All-Star and the best shortstop in team history. He won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 1997 and won batting titles in back-to-back seasons in 1999 and 2000. His career average with the Red Sox stands at .323, with 178 homers and 690 RBIs.

A look back at Nomar’s career in Boston. Gallery

He stressed Wednesday that fan support was one of the biggest reasons why it was so important to him to retire in a Red Sox uniform.”Everywhere I go I get so many [Red Sox fans] come to me and tell me ‘Thank you. We miss you. We still love you,’” Garciaparra said. “And it’s so genuine and the feeling is mutual. Hopefully from my actions throughout my career in that uniform and hopefully my actions today again tell them what it means to me.”Lucchino echoed those sentiments from the team’s perspective.”We welcome you home,” Lucchino said at the press conference. “It gives us enormous pride to recognize the respect you have to the organization, the connection you feel to the organization, the connection you feel to our fans and Fenway Park, and I’m here to fell you the feelings are mutual. When the history of the Boston Red Sox is written again, there will be a very large and important chapter devoted to Nomar Garciaparra.”Garciaparra said he decided to retire when he realized this offseason that due to a condition that has limited him over the years, he “just couldn’t work out the way I like to work out, and that really was my ultimate decision.”

[+] Enlarge

AP Photo/Steven SenneNomar Garciaparra said it was “a dream” to be able to retire as a member of the Red Sox.”There was a time this offseason when I was getting ready and I remember coming home and looking at my wife and going ‘My tank is empty,’” Garciaparra said. “And that for me was an absolute thrill to be able to say that. I really just gave everything I could to this game.”Garciaparra’s wife, former soccer star Mia Hamm, attended the press conference with the couple’s twin daughters.Garciaparra was famously traded to the Chicago Cubs by Epstein at the trade deadline during the 2004 season, a controversial move that resulted in the addition of Doug Mientkiewicz and Orlando Cabrera, who helped to spark the team to its first World Series title in 86 years.
“I felt like I was there,” Garciaparra said, referring to the championship celebration. “In Boston there’s something greater than an individual player winning a World Series. When I was there I realized there’s something bigger than us winning a World Series. It’s winning a World Series for these people.”Epstein, who grew up in the Boston area, was responsible for the trade that dispatched Garciaparra.

“We’ve been fortunate over the years to maintain a relationship after the trade,” Epstein said. “I think both of us understood at the time that it wasn’t about Nomar and it wasn’t about me. It was just baseball trades that happen. They’re about what’s going on with the team at the time and certain things that had to happen. But, it didn’t change what Nomar meant to the Red Sox.”Garciaparra re-signed with the Cubs in 2005, but injuries limited him to just 62 games that season. He played with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006-08 and was a part-time player with the Oakland Athletics last season. He finished his career with 229 home runs, 936 RBIs and a .313 batting average in 14 seasons.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona’s experience with Garciaparra bookends the beginning and end of the infielder’s time with the Red Sox. Francona managed Garciaparra in the Arizona Fall League in 1994, after Garciaparra’s first season with the Red Sox organization and was managing Boston when he was traded in 2004.”The time I had him in the Fall League was one of the highlights of my career,” Francona said Wednesday. “[In 2004,] I think he was kind of Boston’d out. It kind of wore on him for whatever reasons. Sometimes it’s just time to move on.”
The biggest thing that caught Francona’s eye in the Fall League? “A 20-year-old kid personally passing out Christmas cards three weeks early. I hadn’t even bought my family presents yet.

“He wasn’t pulling the ball yet, everything was to right-center, but you could see it coming.”Francona recalled a meeting he had with Kevin Kennedy, who was managing the Red Sox at the time, and Tim Johnson, one of his coaches, and being asked whether he thought Garciaparra could play second base.”I said I don’t know who you have at short, but whoever it is you might want to move him.”In 1997, when Garciaparra made it to the big leagues, new manager Jimy Williams did just that, prompting a brief walkout from camp by John Valentin, who reluctantly gave up short and played second and third.Francona, who was in his first season as manager with the Red Sox, said he didn’t fully realize how iconic Garciaparra was in Boston until after the trading-deadline deal that sent Nomar to the Cubs.”When it was over, I remember laughing with Theo [Epstein], ‘I was behind you every step of the way, not in front of you.”’”He was a Red Sox for a long time and I think he’ll always be remembered as a Red Sox,” said pitcher Tim Wakefield, who was Garciaparra’s teammate for the shortstop’s entire stay in Boston. “For the organization to sign him to a one-day deal and have him retire as a Red Sox is pretty special. I’m really happy for him. I wish he was still playing but sometimes our careers take different paths.”

Scott Burnside: Policy Needs More Teeth

The NHL GMs’ proposal outlawing blindside hits to the head needs mandatory punishment, rather than counting on discipline from the league office, writes Scott Burnside. Blog

NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell made the announcement Wednesday at the general managers’ meeting in Boca Raton, Fla. Penguins general manager Ray Shero also confirmed the news to ESPN.com via e-mail.Cooke delivered a blindside hit with his shoulder to Savard in the third period of Sunday’s game. Savard was taken away on a stretcher and has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 concussion. He is out indefinitely, and Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has said Savard possibly could miss the remainder of the season.Doctors will continue to evaluate Savard during the next several days before determining how long the star center might be out.”I’m surprised and angered [by the lack of suspension],” Chiarelli said in a conference call, according to Comcast New England. “The last few days I’ve been lobbying the Hockey Ops staff with respect to the Cooke hit on Savard, and I really felt strongly. The issue here is that they felt there was no infraction: he didn’t leave his feet, he didn’t charge, he didn’t use an elbow. They ruled it was a shoulder hit to the head. It was a very surgical hit to the head.”"I don’t know what to say. Of course we thought he would be suspended,” Bruins forward Steve Begin said, according to the Boston Herald. “We thought the league would take care of it. They’ve been talking about shots to the head for a while and now they have a perfect example and they don’t do anything about it.”
Campbell told reporters he needed to remain consistent in his decision — he also did not suspend Philadelphia center Mike Richards for a similar hit on Florida winger David Booth on Oct. 24. That hit resulted in a Grade 3 concussion that sidelined Booth for 45 games. His first game after the hit was Jan. 31.

Cooke

Under the new guidelines recommended by GMs on Wednesday at the conclusion of their meetings, both hits would have been subject to a penalty and a possible suspension next season. The recommendation of a rule change still needs to be approved by the NHL/NHLPA competition committee and by the league’s board of governors.”I know it’s not something that Boston fans, or hockey fans would like to hear,” Campbell said, according to TSN. “They want justice. We feel we have to be consistent and do what we feel is right and hopefully we’ve gone to a place in our meetings today that we can eradicate plays like this in the future.”Cooke has a recent history of hits to the head. He was suspended for two games in November 2009 after checking Rangers center Artem Anisimov in the head. He was suspended again, also for two games, for hitting Hurricanes forward Scott Walker in the head in January.
“I know Matt Cooke is a repeat offender, he’s been suspended twice in the last year,” Campbell said, according to TSN of Canada. “I can’t suspend Matt Cooke for being a repeat offender, I have to find a reason. Right now our rules say that shoulders to head are legal. Matt Cooke did not jump, and did not do anything that we found illegal in his actions even though again you don’t like what happened,” added Campbell.Cooke and the Penguins visit Boston on March 18.Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.

James
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — LeBron James is expected to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ lineup against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, while Antawn Jamison will be a game-time decision. They were just two of six players to miss practice Wednesday for the Cavaliers, who took advantage of a break in the schedule to rest all five of their regular starters.James missed two games after twisting his right ankle last Friday against Detroit, but is likely to play at Philadelphia, Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. James has played the sixth-most minutes in the league this season, averaging 39 per game.Jamison won’t practice the rest of the week after revealing Wednesday he has a cyst behind his left knee that is filled with fluid. Shaquille O’Neal continues to rehab following surgery on his right thumb, while Anthony Parker and Mo Williams also took Wednesday off to rest nagging injuries. Key sub Anderson Varejao also missed practice, but it wasn’t clear if he had an injury or just took the day off.All are expected to play Friday except for O’Neal and perhaps Jamison. An MRI earlier this week showed no damage to the knee and Jamison said it’s the same injury that hampered him early in the season when he was with Washington.”Perfect timing for something like this to happen,” Jamison said, referring to the three days off between games. “This organization is looking at the overall picture to make sure guys are healthy when it counts.”Even if Jamison doesn’t play Friday, he insists he’ll be back on the floor Sunday when Cleveland hosts Atlantic Division leader Boston. He said the cyst is a product of his mechanics and the way he runs. There are certain exercises he must do to keep the knee flexible, but admitted he hadn’t done as much maintenance on it lately because of the trade to Cleveland and trying to get settled in a new city.”They want me to relax and let it calm down this week,” Jamison said. “It feels pretty good. It’s something that occurred earlier in the season. With proper treatment, it went away, so I don’t see this lingering any longer than it has the last couple of days.”
Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press

GMs Propose Rule Change On Hits To Head
BOCA RATON, Fla. — NHL general managers will recommend a rule change on blindside hits to the head, looking to protect players and punish those responsible in a game that has become faster and rougher. The unanimous decision Wednesday came at the end of three days of meetings in which player head injuries was the predominant issue.

Burnside: Change Coming?

The NHL’s general managers made important proposals for the league to consider. It will be up to the competition committee, however, if real change occurs, Scott Burnside writes. Story

The GMs will recommend to the competition committee that referees call a minor or major penalty for any hit where the primary point of contact is the head. Such a violation would be reviewed for possibly further discipline.”This is a great next step to take these types of hits out of our game and to deal with the perpetrators appropriately,” Florida Panthers general manager Randy Sexton said. The competition committee will make its review during the NHL finals. The committee is made up of five players, five GMs and Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider. If approved, the proposal would go to the board of governors for ratification. The players have already signaled support and the new rule — yet to be given a specific name — could take effect next season.”We look forward to receiving and reviewing the general managers’ proposal,” NHLPA spokesperson Jonathan Weatherdon said in a statement. “Hits to the head, including blindside hits, are important issues facing the NHLPA membership. In order to appropriately address these issues, the NHLPA’s competition committee members will thoroughly review this proposal and gather feedback from the membership prior to the committee’s meeting this summer.”The general managers also agreed to send to the competition committee a proposal suggesting a tiebreaking format for the playoffs, favoring regulation and overtime wins and removing shootout wins from the total.Colin Campbell, the NHL director for hockey operations, said it would be too difficult to adopt the rule on hits to the head this season because players and officials need to be educated about it.”We’re we are going is taking a completely legal hit now, with the shoulder, and saying from a certain aspect in the future, next year, that’s going to be an illegal hit if delivered to the head,” Campbell said. “Part two of that, which is a huge statement in the game, we’re shifting some of the responsibility from the player getting hit to the player delivering the hit, which was never part of the game.”You grew up you always had to have your head up, you’d get crap from your dad if you got hit when you were watching your pass. But now there’s some responsibility on the guy delivering the hit,” he said.

“

It’s the same thing like quarterbacks in football — they’re still going to get hit, but it’s when they’re getting hit and how they’re getting hit and that’s exactly what my analogy is with this. We’re putting in preventative medicine.

”
– Lou Lamoriello, Devils GM

The discussions this week were largely an outgrowth of a hit to Panthers left winger David Booth this season. Booth was taken off the rink in a stretcher after a hit by Flyers captain Mike Richards on Oct. 24. Booth missed 45 days because of a concussion and is playing again.”I don’t think it’s a cultural shift at all,” Sexton said. “Hockey is a physical game and we want to maintain the physicality, but we want clean physical play. We want to maintain the integrity of our game.”The general managers contend the players would support the proposal as a step to make the game safer.”This will never alleviate the problem because whenever you have a contact sport injuries can take place,” said Lou Lamoriello, the general manager of the New Jersey Devils. “It’s the same thing like quarterbacks in football — they’re still going to get hit, but it’s when they’re getting hit and how they’re getting hit and that’s exactly what my analogy is with this.”We’re putting in preventative medicine, and in my opinion it will go through and the players won’t have a problem with this at all,” he said.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Mattingly To
Replace Torre?
GLENDALE, Ariz. — On his first day as Dodgers interim manager, hitting coach Don Mattingly said Wednesday that the team has made overtures about him eventually becoming Joe Torre’s permanent replacement. With Torre en route to Taiwan to manage a Dodgers split squad for three exhibition games, Mattingly is in charge of the team in Arizona and will work at least five games as manager.Mattingly interviewed with the Cleveland Indians for their manager opening this offseason. He then turned down an interview request from the Washington Nationals. In a meeting this winter with Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, owner Frank McCourt and team president Dennis Mannion, Mattingly said the word manager was brought up but “nothing definitive” was said or done.”We talked about it, for sure,” he said.Mattingly’s first day managing came complete with a rookie gaffe when the Dodgers batted out of order against the Arizona Diamondbacks later Wednesday. Andre Ethier came to the plate twice in the span of three Dodgers batters. Crew chief Mike Winters wanted Ethier to hit behind Matt Kemp to adhere to the lineup card the Dodgers submitted to the umpires before the game.Dodgers bench coach Bob Schaefer filled out the lineup cards, but the one posted in the dugout listed Ethier batting before Kemp.”I could have avoided it simply by just checking the lineup card,” said Mattingly. “We usually look at it before the game but I didn’t even look at it.”The Dodgers and Diamondbacks called it off with the game tied at 4 after 10 innings.Torre’s contract expires after this season but both he and McCourt said they are working on a one-year extension. Mattingly would then take over the Dodgers in 2012.”Obviously with Joe, everything is off of him,” Mattingly said. “[After] the first interview with Cleveland, talking to the Dodgers I felt like I was part of their future and they liked me. I like it here. I’ll keep working toward that.”Mattingly, who turns 49 on April 20, has no managerial experience. He was the Yankees’ bench coach in 2007, taking over games twice when Torre was ejected. He said the Yankees went 1-1 in those games.Torre also turned over the first four spring games to Mattingly with the Dodgers going 1-3 in those contests.”I’ve been pretty much managing every day down here,” Mattingly said. “I’m not doing too good at it.”Mattingly has no family ties to Los Angeles, but has always had an affinity for the area.”I liked California the first time I came out to play in Anaheim,” he said. “We were always coming out from the East Coast where it was hot and you get out here and it was cool at night. It was good playing weather. But more than anything it fits my personality as much as anything.”Mattingly described himself as laid back and joked that his quotes as manager would be boring.Still, with his duties as hitting coach to tend to, Mattingly plans to lean on Schaefer for help over the next few days.”I have to keep my priorities straight,” Mattingly said. “I know where I want to go but I also know what my job is and I’ll keep my mind on that. I’ll soak up as much as I can with all the other areas as we go.”
Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press

The 48-year-old defenseman, a three-time Norris Trophy winner, has been called up by the Atlanta Thrashers, general manager Don Waddell told ESPN.com on Wednesday.”Can’t wait. Got to make the most out of this chance,” Chelios said in a text message to ESPN.com.Chelios had 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) in 46 games with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves this season. He signed an NHL deal with the Thrashers on March 2. The Wolves are Atlanta’s primary AHL affiliate.”Chris has been an outstanding leader and mentor for our young players in Chicago and his level of play has made him deserving of this opportunity,” Waddell said. “He’s a tremendous competitor who strengthens our group of defensemen and instantly adds a veteran presence to our locker room.”The Chicago native, who has played in more games than any other American-born NHL player, last played in the NHL last May 27 with the Detroit Red Wings against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals.Chelios was limited to 28 games with Detroit during the 2008-09 regular season because of a broken leg suffered during an exhibition game. He has appeared in an NHL-record 266 Stanley Cup playoff games and is a three-time captain for the U.S. Olympic team.At 48, Chelios is still three years younger than the oldest man to ever play in an NHL game. Gordie Howe was 51 when he scored 15 goals for the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80.Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report..

TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Marion Jones hasn’t lost much of her swagger.
The disgraced sprinter once called the world’s fastest woman was introduced
Wednesday as the newest member of the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock and she offered no
apologies for her steroids use or her time in federal prison. She was poised and
ready for questions about her troubled past.
“The word redemption is not in my vocabulary,” Jones said at a news
conference, flanked by team president Steve Swetoha and coach Nolan Richardson.
“I’m a competitor, I want to play against the best in the world, and I know
that I will be doing that.”

Her bid for a new career comes a decade after she starred at the Sydney
Olympics, winning gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay, and
bronze in the long jump and 400-meter relay. She was stripped of all five medals
after admitting in 2007 that she was using performance-enhancing drugs—a
designer steroid called the “clear”—at the time of the games.
Jones also spent about six months in a Texas prison for lying to federal
prosecutors about doping and her role in a check-fraud scam.
The 34-year-old Jones joined the team just four days after working out for
Richardson, who is also the team’s general manager. She was signed to at least a
one-year contract but terms were not disclosed.
Jones was the starting point guard on North Carolina’s national championship
team in 1994 and she was drafted by Phoenix in 2003 but never played in the
WNBA. She said playing for the Shock is not about her past but instead fulfills
her dream of playing basketball against the best players in the world.
“I think when I even started to think about this 10 months ago, I know how
much the game has grown from the time that I played,” Jones said. “And that
became even more of a challenge for me, because I know that although I know
certain things and played a certain way, that it’s 10 times faster, that the
athletes are 10 times more skilled.”
WNBA president Donna Orender, who attended the news conference, said Jones
generates interest in the league because she’s a highly accomplished athlete who
has competed on a global stage.
“This is a tremendous, real-life story of a person who made a choice that
was not a wise choice, but is saying listen, ‘I’m going to be a role model, I’m
going to showcase what I’m going to do with the rest of my life,”’ Orender told
The Associated Press. “I join the rest of America in wanting to watch this
story unfold.”
Jones will join a team that is a work in progress. All-Stars Deanna Nolan
and Katie Smith had agreed to contract extensions, but apparently won’t play for
Tulsa when the season begins in May.
Richardson said Nolan has indicated she intends to skip the upcoming season
to rest instead of relocating with the team, which moved to Tulsa from Detroit
in the offseason. And Smith, a six-time All-Star, has already said she doesn’t
plan to play in Tulsa and is listed as a free agent by the league.
Also unknown is how much of an initial draw the city’s only major pro sports
team will be. Tulsa County has a population of about 592,000 and Tulsa is the
second-smallest city with a WNBA franchise, behind Uncasville, Conn.
If nothing else, Jones could be a draw.
“She made some ill-advised decisions in the past, but everyone deserves a
second chance to excel at something they love,” Swetoha said. “The city of
Tulsa gave a struggling franchise from Detroit a second chance, and I’m
confident it will do the same for Marion. We couldn’t be happier to have her on
board.”
The Shock will play at 18,000-seat BOK Center downtown. The team itself has
a great pedigree: Detroit made its WNBA debut in 1998 and won titles in 2003,
2006 and 2008.
Richardson, who led Arkansas to the men’s NCAA championship the same year
Jones won the title at North Carolina, plans to play the same “40 Minutes of
Hell” style in the WNBA.
“Watching her go through drills, I saw a player who’s perfect for our
system,” Richardson said. “The one thing I do know is she can run, and any
player on my team who wants to be successful needs be able to run.”
